The Beauty That Travertine Offers: Pamukkale

The Beauty That Travertine Offers: Pamukkale
Pamukkale is a unique natural beauty known for its magnificent landscape formed by white limestone deposits called travertine. Pamukkale is located in the Pamukkale district of Denizli province in western Turkey. Known since ancient times and attracting the attention of visitors, Pamukkale was formed as a result of the accumulation of thermal spring waters on the travertine.
The white travertine of Pamukkale is formed by the accumulation of calcium carbonate contained in thermal water springs. For centuries, hot water from these springs flows between the hills, creating travertine formations. This natural process takes place when hot water dissolves calcium carbonate and this carbonate precipitates upon contact with air. This creates a system of white stepped terraces, and the flow of water creates white pools and small ponds on the travertine.
This unique structure of the travertine in Pamukkale has ensured its inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List. The region is also famous for the health and treatment opportunities provided by its thermal waters. Pamukkale is also home to the ancient city of Hierapolis; therefore, visitors can enjoy both natural beauties and historical and archaeological riches.
